Moving Around Within a Song

Posted by on in

While playing a song in FATpick there are several ways to jump to different parts, as described in this post.

Player Controls

The most prominent song navigation option are the media control buttons found at the top of the screen.

These buttons work very much like the controls you might find on an old-school tape-deck or CD player or in modern streaming music service.

These media controls operate the same way in both performance and practice mode.

Song Progress Bar

At the bottom of the play screen you will find a miniature tablature view that provides an overview of the entire song. That is, while the main tablature view only displays part of the song at one time (so that you can read the notes more easily), the progress bar is a map of the entire song. The left-most edge of the progress bar is always the very beginning of the song and the right-most edge of is always the very end of the song. The playhead — the red line that indicates your current position in the song — is shown on both the main and miniature (progress bar) tab, and you will see that it scrolls from left to right while the song plays.

The progress bar acts as a type of scroll-bar. It indicates your current place in the song and — when the player is not in performance mode — it can be used to jump to specific points in the song. Simply click on the progress bar to jump to move the playhead to that point in the song.

You can also click and drag the playhead to a new position.

Arrow Key Navigation

When song playback is paused (and the player is in practice mode) you may also use the arrow keys to move backwards and forwards within the song. Modifier keys like "Control" or "Option" will slightly change the behavior of the arrow keys, much like they do in a text editor or word processor.

Note that the arrow keys have no effect when the song is playing or when you are in performance mode.

The precision provided by arrow key navigation is especially useful when you are positioning the playhead in order to set up a repeat loop for practicing a single riff over and over.
